Reading romance novels a sign of sexual addiction?

At least, according to the Singapore Ministry of Health, it may be. In an interesting effort to help its citizenry combat their sexual compulsions, Singapore designed a website to help them determine if their compulsions have become addictive.

For the men, the Community Addictions Management Programme Site provides a 25-question survey which asks the following:

  • Do you often find yourself preoccupied with sexual thoughts?
  • Have you ever had sex with someone just because you were feeling aroused and later felt ashamed or regretted it?
  • Have you ever cruised public restrooms, rest areas and/or parks looking for sexual encounters with strangers?" (OK, this sounds like a gay thing)

Included among the questions for the women are the following:

  • Do you regularly purchase romance novels or sexually explicit magazines?" (bold added by moi - BTW, why aren't the men asked this? That would definitely be a sign of sexual addiction for them, don't you think?)
  • Do you find yourself preoccupied with sexual thoughts or romantic day-dreams? (OK, c'mon. Who isn't?)
  • Do you ever feel bad about your sexual behaviour?" (Uhmm...)

So my answer to the questions for the women: yes (well, not regularly, but still), yes, and no. So does this make me an addict - or just a hussy without shame? Hmmm...
