Octavia Butler Memorial Fund

In honor of Octavia Butler, who passed away last month, Warner Books, Seven Stories Press, Beacon Press, The Carl Brandon Society, and others have established the Octavia E. Butler Memorial Scholarship Fund.

The fund will allow writers of color to attend one of the Clarion Writers Workshops held in Seattle, Washington where Ms. Butler got her start over thirty years ago and where she taught until her death. She also taught workshops in East Lansing, Michigan. The first fund, to be administered by The Carl Brandon Society, will be awarded in 2007.

Walter Moseley had this to say about the creation of the fund: "Octavia Butler has been a beacon for thousands of us. She carved out a place in the darkness and made a berth where there was none. This award will continue her legacy making sure that others will find their way to harbor."

Per The Backlist.
