Tuesday, November 22, 2005 My new hero Congressman and respected war veteran John Murtha finally told off Bush and Associates and I give him a hearty salute. One of the few Democratic congressmen to display some chutzpah, Murtha called for the withdrawal of troops within the next six months. When Cheney and Bush responded (on Veteran's Day, no less) by declaring that certain politicians had lost their "backbone," and when Rep. Jean Schmidt (R- ) alluded to Murtha as a coward, Murtha did not cower as previous war veterans had done when their patriotism was offensively questioned. Instead he responded strongly with the truth: "I like guys who've never been there that criticize us who've been there. I like that. I like guys who got five deferments and never been there and send people to war, and then don't like to hear suggestions about what needs to be done. I resent the fact, on Veterans' Day, he [Bush] criticized Democrats for criticizing them." Thank you, Murtha for telling it like it is. Too many politicians have let these deferment babies call the shots and deepen the quagmire that Iraq is quickly becoming. Maybe had other defamed veterans spoken up as strongly early in the game, the body count might be less by a few bodies in a war that is dubious at best. But hopefully, with Murtha leading the call for withdrawal, the number of soldiers killed won't escalate to Vietnam's horrendous 56,000 loss. Per Salon.
