TOOL & BAD BOYS Short, Short Ebooks |
Wednesday, July 26, 2006 If Pelecanos is having trouble moving books... ...and he's a stellar author, then what chance do I have of going through at least one print run? I guess I really have to do this for the love of the art and not lust of money 'cause it may not happen. For a quick synopsis, George Pelecanos is an established name in mysteries whose 14th novel, THE NIGHT GARDENER, will be coming out in August. Although Pelecanos has written to critical acclaim, he has yet to become a commercial success. We're talking numbers like 13,000 sold for his last five books. That is woefully low...and also very surprising. You expect these numbers with a newly published author and even then that would be considered moderate. So what gives? M. J. Rose believes it's a lack of innovative marketing by industry heads and she may be right. Or could it just be a combo of bad to no marketing, a stagnant economy which is responsible for an overall downturn in book buying, and a gluttonous market where every blink of an eye signals another book published? With so many books to choose from, the chances for any one book being purchased is thinned considerably. Even so, c'mon - if Pelecanos can't sell more than 13,000 copies of his critically acclaimed stories, then something is broken in this industry and no one seems to know how to fix it. Per New York Times.
