Caution: Authors blogs - use them wisely

Author Jason Pinter has written an illuminating guest column on author M. J. Rose's marketing blog. Pinter warns us authors that we have to know when to shut up while blogging or maintaining an author's site. It seems too many of us reveal intimate details about our publishing relationship that may piss off some of our publishers.

As many writers have suspected for some time, editors and publishers do make the blog rounds, at least those of their authors. As well as authors not affiliated with their houses. As Pinter notes:

"...it amazes me how open and loose some authors are when expressing disappointment with their publisher, their difficulty writing, their dislike of anything pertaining to publicity, and their general scorn for marketing. And if I'm reading these blogs, you can be sure their editor, publicist, and agent are reading them too. And they probably aren't too keen on being dissed on the internet."

That was one of the issues I brought up with my own editor, although not specifically regarding the publishing industry. I tend to be foot-in-the-mouth on certain issues and I know that I may turn off some readers, whether on issues of politics, gender or race. And this may deflect some sales. Luckily, I have an open-minded editor who thinks my blog is entertaining, so even though I may have put my foot in upper orifice on occasion, thankfully I haven't swallowed said ped. She reassured me that if someone was turned off by my expressing my beliefs, then just kiss them goodbye and keep going.

I agree with Pinter though that blogs and websites are valuable author's tools. I also agree that you as an author shouldn't publicly shit on the hand that pays you. I've seen blogs where the author blatantly criticized their publishers and editors alike. As for me, I believe the telephone and email are for such complaints; these are legitimate avenues for tete-a-tetes with your editors/publishers - that is if you are seeking some sort of resolution.

But if you just want to bitch for bitching sake, without thought to the consequence of your career, then feel free to blast away. Just don't bitch later when you don't get another three-book deal.
