Saturday, August 12, 2006 Happy Birthday, PC The IBM personal computer (remember it?) hits the quarter mark today and I for one am grateful that it was born because it sure has made my life easier. Although my entry into the computing life started twenty years ago on a Wang CRT and the word processing software at the time was Multimate. But even as I was learning Wang, it was already being phased out. My abrupt intro to Windows happened years later on the job with no training. My boss at the time had the software downloaded on my IBM and expected me to finish up a report within the next hours. I almost cried going from a menu system to the icon point and click, which he didn't even know how to use. Fortunately, I figured it out after a whole lot of mumbling about quitting my job. My boss just laughed it off. MSN does a good write-up about the history of the computer, emerging from the horrendous "Big Blue" to the more desk portables. Jealous though I am, I have to give up to the lads who thought up this one. And I bow deeply to the likes of Bill Gates, Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak who started with their own prototypes and took personal computing steps further, changing the world's culture forever. I remember when seeing my first Mac while working a temp job wondering what all the fuss was about. What was this "mouse" and "trashcan"? Little did it know. So, what next guys? I'm waiting.
