Saturday, August 12, 2006 Is Bob Dylan mackin' on Alicia Keys? Could be, as the iconic singer has a history of appreciation for ladies dark and sweet. Although it might just be an indication of professional admiration that he has written the young musical beauty into the lyrics of his latest cut, "Thunder on the Mountain": I was thinking about Alicia Keys, couldn't help from crying When she was born in Hell's Kitchen, I was living down the line I'm wondering where in the world Alicia Keys could be I been looking for her even clean through Tennessee. OK, sounds like some pining going on there. As for Ms. Keys, she's beyond flattered. She exclaims that she's "crazy excited about it" and "honored to be on his mind." (Just on his mind, sweetie?) Anyway, this is not a new road for Dylan, who has had a more than professional crush on several black singers, particularly Mavis Staples, who admitted a couple of years ago that she and Dylan had "courted" for seven years during their heydey. She supposedly turned down his marriage proposal because she thought Martin Luther King wanted her to "stay black." Hunh? Dylan went on to secretly marry Carolyn Dennis, one of his backup singers (all of whom were African American); Dennis also happened to be the daughter of one of the famous Raelettes, who sang backup for Ray Charles. Dylan had a son with Dennis. But what's up with the "secret" marriage? If you're man enough under the sheets, you should man up when the bed is made. Dylan must fancy himself a black woman sheathed in a white male persona. How else to explain the casting of Beyonce as his "inner self" in his upcoming biopic? Anyway, who knows where this seeming admiration (infatuation?) with Ms. Keys may lead. After all, the lovely Ms. Keys is all of twenty-six and Dylan is a still flourishing sextogenarian. Will they make sweet music together literally or will Dylan be left to pine for her even clean through Tennessee? Per Slate Magazine.
