Memories in pictures

Thanks to Salon for pointing me to African-American photographer Teenie Harris, who managed to document decades of Pittsburgh black society. Pictures are so important in keeping the past alive for those of us who have lived it as well as providing a visual chronicle for those who have not.

It's always interesting to see a time and era before me, to imagine the lives of the people in the photos. Here are just a few pics from Harris's chronologue:

My own family has had such bad luck in holding on to pictures. In the 30s, my grandmother sent up a trunk of family mementos and photos only to have said friend steal the trunk along with its contents and leave for parts unknown. For the longest, a portrait of my maternal great grandfather hung in my grandparents bedroom in my childhood home. A former slave and part Cree Indian, he was a stern and dignified looking man. The portrait was lost after it passed to my great aunt, who subsequently died leaving everything to her surviving husband, who never returned the painting to the family. In my own case, nearly all of my grade school photos were lost in a move and at least one of my baby pics is gone. Again bad luck or just outright carelessness. These treasures can never be replaced.

Luckily, some pics did survive:

My great-aunt Fanny, circa 50s:

My uncle Paul, circa 70s:

My mother managed to hold on to her high school album and I discovered she went to the same school as a well-known singer from Chicago. Check it out:

Whenever I want to take a walk down memory lane, whether mine or someone else's, I pull out the photo album. Now, thanks to Teenie Harris, I get a peek at a history similar to my own family's. A treasure trove indeed.
