Some scary sh*t

If you think the expansion of governmental powers and abridgement of citizens' rights isn't anything to be concerned about, just check out what happened to Joshilyn Jackson, author of GODS IN ALABAMA. In the name of anti-terrorism, this young soccer mother and writer was arrested and jailed - because her license had her married name and her Social Security card had her maiden name. This minor discrepancy was enough for her to be brought under suspicion of the local Georgia social security office who, instead of straightening out the situation, managed to f*ck it up to an astronomical degree.

Jackson does a great tongue-in-cheek write up on the incident. What makes this so sadly ridiculous is that when the SS office contacted her to make the name change, she complied in every way, going to their office and getting the name change. Still somehow the SS office managed to screw up the paperwork, and based on their own stupidity, cancelled her driver's license, and then issued a warrant for her arrest.

Jackson might as well have been a bank robber, for all the rights and liberties she was afforded. On second thought, actual criminals tend to get more rights than us average Janes and Joes, so maybe if she had actually killed someone, she might have been given a cleaner cell that didn't contain a toilet people would rather die than use.

Even the cops who picked her up figured this must be a mistake. But because our "auspicious" administration (note the sarcasm) is so stringent in their stupidities, they haven't given law enforcement the discretion to NOT GO AFTER OBVIOUSLY INNOCENT PEOPLE.

That's why this is some scary sh*t. A real disincentive to comply with any dictates by the SS office.

Well, at least she's at home safe and sound now. And at least the cops didn't pull their guns.
