What the heck is wrong with the Texas school system?

First, there was the Shaquandra Cotton fiasco where a 14-year-old black girl was sentenced up to seven years for shoving a hall monitor and now this from Pandagon about a 14-year-old black Austin, Texas student suspended because - (drum roll) - his hair is too short. According to the school's administrators, his haircut violates the rules against disruptive hairstyles. Now look at the picture above and tell me how in the hell is this haircut "disruptive."

What was even more disturbing to me were some of the post comments where former residents who dealt with the Texas school system have run into inequitable treatment of black children, like the one woman whose daughter was written up for wearing a tank top with spaghetti straps while the white girls wore the same thing without being censured. This type of arbitrary punishment is what is actually disruptive.

There's no indication whether this particular case is one of racism, but it makes one very suspicious, given the comments and the Shaquandra Cotton incident. So, instead of filing this under "Racism," I'll just tuck this away under "What the fuck?"
