Thursday, January 01, 2009 Appreciation As some of you know, I've been going through some real life difficulties, including a job layoff and my mother's strokes and subsequent cancer diagnosis, and I've been trying to deal as best I can. Blogging has helped a lot in taking my mind off of some of the things that have been wearing on me, and I appreciate the online friends I have made. When I mentioned to fellow author and friend Roslyn Holcomb that my home is now in foreclosure, she suggested a fundraiser. After doing some soul searching, I swallowed my embarrassment and said yes. It's hard for me to admit that I've been unemployed or underemployed for two years now. Outside of a few freelance projects, I haven't made enough to keep up with my mortgage. I was laid off in December, 2006 for economic reasons, and at the time I knew it wouldn't be easy to find a job with the downturn in the economy, but I never imagined that I would be out of work this long. Even a few of my friends with jobs are finding it difficult to stay ahead of foreclosure, and I find that more and more people are facing similar circumstances. Unfortunately, when you don't have a steady income, you can't even re-negotiate your mortgage or fight the foreclosure in court, so I am preparing for an eventual ouster. I do hope that the new administration will provide stop gap measures to keep those like me in our homes a bit longer, but eventually, without a job, there is no true remedy. If I can't save my home, I'm hoping at least to get funds together to move to an apartment in another state where finding a job might be easier than here in Chicago. I hate giving up my first home, which I was so proud to get before my 40th birthday. It was supposed to be a milestone, but now it's just a bittersweet point in my life. I know it's hard out there for everybody financially, so please know how much I appreciate your generosity. I appreciate Roz for the idea, I appreciate all of you who have posted or put links on your blogs, and I appreciate those of you who have donated. Even though I'm a writer, words fail me, so all I can do is say thank you. Thank you so much. Roz has set up a link at ChipIn. Again, thank you for your donations. Labels: Personal
