Friday, September 30, 2005 How exactly would you take this statement? Found this item at Monica's blog and couldn't hold my peace. As a matter of fact, I'm steaming as I type this post. I have seen the sick t-shirts and heard the blatant hatred from card-carrying racists about aborting black children as a crime deterrent. But to actually hear that Bill Bennett stated the same on his radio show just boggles my mind. As Monica points out, here is a man who held the title of education secretary, which meant he was responsible for the education of every American child in this country, including black children. And that he holds them in such contempt is sickening. Right now, Mr. Bennett is backing away from his words, saying they were taken out of context, but I'll let you decide. See how else you could interpret this statement: If you wanted to reduce crime, you could -- if that were your sole purpose, you could abort every black baby in this country and your crime rate would go down. That would be an impossible, ridiculous, and morally reprehensible thing to do, but your crime rate would go down. So these far-out, these far-reaching, you know, extensive extrapolations are, I think, tricky. Wouldn't be easy to take it at anything but face value.
