Race and romance on television

USA Today has an article about interracial couples on today's shows including Lost, Grey's Anatomy, ER, and My Name is Earl. The premise is that viewers are more accepting of interracial couples, and that race as depicted is a non-issue. Actor Isaiah Washington, who portrays Dr. Burke, has gone as far as to not even comment on his character's IR affair with Dr. Yang, portrayed by Sandra Oh. He feels "that drawing attention to the races takes away from the fact that it's quietly and happily existing without being an issue."

I guess we've come a long way since Star Trek's first kiss between Lt. Uhuru and Captain Kirk (although I argue that the kiss never happened as their lips never met). And considering it was forced, it doesn't count.

Now, if this acceptance would only translate into written romance, maybe another barrier will have been crossed.
