Saturday, April 22, 2006 Taking an objective look at the Duke fiasco Yes, it is a fiasco from all points. Everyone is CSIng this case with as little knowledge as it takes to make rash and uninformed judgments. Even I have had to take a step back and start looking at the case with less emotion and more objectivity. And even doing that, it is impossible to say what happened that night of March 13 in the off-campus home of several Duke lacrosse team members. Bits and pieces are leaked strategically to lend bias to one camp or another. So many pundits, those on television and those watching television, have had their say. Dahlia Lithwick of Slate magazine takes a look at us then, the viewers, the judgers, the arm-chair Sherlocks, the uncertified CSI experts who are feeding the frenzy and she's determined that we tend to seek out the evidence that will "confirm what we already know in our bones to be true." Which means that we are human and we err on the side of us, our own opinions, our own prejudices. A result-oriented observation will always garner something that confirms our suspicions and supports our biases. But in the end, what is the truth? We may never know.
