TOOL & BAD BOYS Short, Short Ebooks |
Saturday, July 08, 2006 Sad...no, make that scary... The idea of someone never reading a book outside of school makes me wonder at a culture of deliberate ignorance - that is, only learning enough to get by, choosing not to edify your mind beyond superficial entertainment. Never having a thought that isn't fed to you from a television or the computer. Not researching for yourself, but simply accepting what is written up in politically skewed news sources. No wonder we're headed in the direction we're going. Somewhere, we took a wrong turn and now we seem hopelessly lost. Here are the stats that give me pause, also provided by Boing Boing: One-third of high school graduates never read another book for the rest of their lives. Many do not even graduate from high school. 58% of the US adult population never reads another book after high school. 42% of college graduates never read another book. 80% of US families did not buy or read a book last year. 70% of US adults have not been in a bookstore in the last five years. 57% of new books are not read to completion.
