Tuesday, July 04, 2006 Unsettling ![]() So imagine my surprise when I see in the news that a huge asteroid just whizzed by Earth early yesterday. It even has a name - 2004 XP14. Although this thing flew by 433,000 kilometers away (just slightly farther away than the moon), it was still a "whew" moment for scientists. Scientists estimate that 2004 XP14, at 800 meters among the largest asteroid to whiz by us, will have several more encounters with Earth over this century. I just hope never to be standing in its trajectory should it arc a little closer to us.
