Tuesday, July 04, 2006 Unsettling A couple of nights ago I caught the tail end of DEEP IMPACT (1997), where Earth is threatened by a comet on a collision course with the planet. As the comet neared the atmosphere, tidal waves and earthquakes erupted around the world. The FX was decent enough that you sensed the fear and devastation of people trying to outrun 300 ft. waves. And at the time I thought, well it'll be some time before we're ever going to face a similar disaster. So imagine my surprise when I see in the news that a huge asteroid just whizzed by Earth early yesterday. It even has a name - 2004 XP14. Although this thing flew by 433,000 kilometers away (just slightly farther away than the moon), it was still a "whew" moment for scientists. Scientists estimate that 2004 XP14, at 800 meters among the largest asteroid to whiz by us, will have several more encounters with Earth over this century. I just hope never to be standing in its trajectory should it arc a little closer to us.
