Monday, September 11, 2006 Why is Chicago so corrupt? Slate's Explainer attempts to answer the question, apropros given the recent conviction of Illinois' former Governor George Ryan, who was sentenced to six-and-a-half-years for corruption. One of the statements that struck me: "If the inhabitants of a city view corruption as a given, they'll be more inclined to forgive politicians who have already been tainted by scandal, like Chicago's current mayor, Richard Daley." Trust me, as a native Chicagoan, there're loads of truth to that statement. To many residents, the croneyism, nepotism, graft and votes for sale are all just business as usual. Hardly anyone blinks an eye anymore. Even the convicted Ryan still has his apologists (due mostly to the man's slick move of implementing a moratorium on Illinois' death penalty that made him a hero of sorts).
