Monday, January 29, 2007 You can't rule out a dead duck It used to be that the phrase "dead duck" meant someone or something was pretty much a goner. But in the case of this particular duck, it's more like Lazarus raised from the dead - twice. The ring-necked duck, presumed dead after being shot by a hunter, gave the hunter's wife a scare two days later when the wife opened the refrigerator door and saw the duck lift its head to look at her. Considering the duck a miracle, the couple decided to give it a break and not kill it; instead they took it to a veterinarian. Unfortunately, the one-pound female stopped breathing on the operating table to repair its wing. Veterinarian David Hale performed CPR and managed to get the bird breathing again. Noni Beck of Goose Creek Wildlife Sanctuary said she started crying, exclaiming "She's alive!" So, the next time you call someone a dead duck, it may be a safe bet not to rule them out just yet.
