Thursday, February 08, 2007 An Amazon/TiVo Joint You knew it had to happen sooner or later in an ever-evolving tech society where waiting three shipping days is becoming an anathema. First Amazon created the Unbox, a service which allows internet downloads of shows and movies from Amazon purchases. Now Amazon has teamed with TiVo in a joint venture to immediately send ordered movies to your television. A test version, called Amazon Unbox, is being sampled with a few TiVo customers. The full service will launch later this year and will be available to TiVo customers with broadband capacity. The service will provide thousands of movies and television shows and will include more studios and networks in the future. Competitors to this venture include Wal-Mart Stores, which unveiled its own download service this week, and studio-owned Movielink and CinemaNow. However, Amazon/TiVo is the only service to directly send your purchase to your television set. But trust Apple to get into the fray with it's own streaming box which will allow downloaded movies to be moved from the purchasers' computers to their television sets. So are these new ventures a resounding death knell for hardcopy DVDs (or tangible books, CDs)? Hardly. Just another option expansion for an increasingly I WANT IT NOW society. Personally, I love avoiding shipping charges. I can use the money I save to actually purchase one of them TiVos.
