Thursday, September 28, 2006 Another voice silenced Ama Jan was the "Susan B. Anthony" of Afghanistan, speaking up for women repressed by a hellish regime. But Ama Jan paid a higher price on Monday when two Taliban assassins gunned her down as she rode in a taxi on her way to work administering the women's department of the southern Kandahar government. Before her death, I did not know of Ama Jan. Still, hearing of her death saddens me because I admire anyone who speaks up for the rights of others. I especially admire those who do it at risk of life. That takes a measure of courage not many have. No doubt Jan knew the risks of speaking against a regime that in the best of times minimized women as mere appendages and childbearers. But Jan wanted much more for the women of her country and refused to be silent. Unfortunately, the gains that the Afghan women realized shortly after the ouster of the Taliban are slowing being eroded. Women previously elected into government seats are dropping out for lack of just basic respect. And girls' schools are being attacked by Taliban forces (previously, girls were forced to remain at home where they were kept illiterate). Warlords are increasing in force, focused on bringing back the tyranny rampant before the Taliban's fall. If there aren't more Ama Jan's, unfortunately the Afghan women may cease to have a voice at all. Hopefully they will realize that although one voice may now be silent, they still have a chorus among them.
