Thursday, September 21, 2006 An organization for black writers In the past few days author Monica Jackson has posted a series of columns regarding the entrenched racism in romance publishing and the dismissive attitude by the Romance Writers of America toward black writers. She and several commentors on her blog have come up with a viable solution - a romance organization focused on improving the situation of black writers. I am new to being published and haven't suffered the slings and arrows that so many of my fellow writers have. But in improving the lot for all, Monica is helping to pave the way for writers currently in the market and those who will come behind us. Racism is a reality but it need not be passively accepted just to avoid "unpleasantness." We as black female writers have a double duty - fighting against racism as well as sexism. For those female writers who aren't black and can't fathom the frustration, then think about the entrenched sexism out there against women writers (which Monica has also blogged about). When we're told that women can't write on par with male authors, it diminishes us all. When we're told we can't write on par with white authors, again, it diminishes us all. So, I'm going to do my small part and post the link for the organization Monica is helping to start up. It's open to everybody no matter race or gender, but again the focus will be making black writers a viable force. Just click on the link below: http://monicajackson.com/blackwriters.html Here is a positive step toward combatting the negativity so many find in publishing.
