Friday, March 31, 2006 Another sad commentary Here's a comment I found over at Rachel's Tavern which saddens me to no end: The poster identifies herself as Kate L. - "Slightly off topic, I wanted to share my dismay (but not shock) at the lack of concern by many people. I am a member of a pretty popular chat board. I use both a local and a national parenting board to discuss anything and everything - from breastfeeding and diapering to American Idol. These are boards that are populated by literally hundereds of women (possibly thousands) - most of them white, most of them probably middle - upper middle class - not all of course, but most. I posted this afternoon - a heavy traffic time on the boards and got literally 2 responses so far. I simply asked the question "What do people think of the Duke Lacrosse scandal?" I did not push it one way or another. I was just curious what if anything people have heard and how they felt about it. This board is often a reality check for me of what many white, relatively conservative, middle class women in my age bracket are thinking - I'm out of touch with this in my "real life" because I tend to surround myself with people who are pretty liberal and fall out of the norm. I'm not saying these women are the "avg" white woman late 20s- early 40's, but I do think it's a decent glimpse without a random sample. I am appalled that as of now, there have been 2 people who have responded to my post - one who simply said she knew nothing about it (I posted a SHORT synopsis and have received no response) and one who is in the Durham local area who basically posted that she thinks it's awful if it happened, and that there's pretty compelling evidence the men were racist and that she is surprised by the national attention. I'm deeply disturbed that most of them ignored the post - or at least have nothing to say about it. This is definitely a parenting issue - particularly for mothers of sons - I think it's highly important that we talk about how we can raise our children not to commit heinous acts like these just as it is important to raise our daughters with an awareness of what kinds of things can occur. The fact that my clue into "avg, middle class white women" - again not a random sample, but a probably a decent approximation of how MANY middle class white women feel- demonstrated such apathy is deeply distubing to me. These are women who will post for an hour about American Idol or Britney Spears' parenting - but they can't muster a thought about the gang rape of a young woman by "upstanding, outstanding young men?" It's appalling. Just wanted to say that to someone."
