Monday, January 09, 2006 Oprah burned again?  James Frey may now be as welcomed around Oprah as Jonathan Frantzen is. Seems the "memoirist" lauded by Oprah as her October book club pick might actually be a fabulist. According to The Smoking Gun, Mr. Frey's book, A Million Little Pieces, which supposedly recounts Frey's grueling drug addiction and recovery, was embellished for "obvious dramatic reasons." The website states that Frey's three-month stay at a rehabilitation center was actually no more than a few days. Another account called into question is the suicide of Frey's girlfriend, Lilly, whom he met in rehab. Supposedly, Lilly called Frey while he was still in rehab, and as soon as he was released, he raced to her side only to find her already dead.To date, only The Smoking Gun is calling Frey a liar. And Mr. Frey is not commenting. But if the charges are substantiated that Frey indeed lied, it will be another embarrassment for the talk show giantess as Frey's book was particularly promoted by Oprah as her venture into non-fiction. Ironically, it seems she might have pushed a fictional work after all. My advice to Oprah: just stick with fictional writers; their books tend to be truer to life. Per New York Times.
